GCBC FULFILLS ITS PLEDGE OF GH₵100,000 TO SUPPORT DAM SPILLAGE VICTIMS

The Ghana Catholic Bishop’s Conference has handed over a cheque of fifty thousand Ghana Cedis each to the Archbishop of Accra, Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, CSSp  and the Bishop of Keta -Akatsi Diocese, Most Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD,  in support of victims of the affected areas of the Akosombo Dam Spillage. The donation was made at the National Catholic Secretariat (NCS), Accra, Friday 27th October 2023, in fulfillment of the pledge of the sum of one hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC100, 000:00) announced by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani Diocese and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), on behalf of the Conference, and published recently on the front page of Ghana’s National Catholic Weekly, “The Catholic Standard”. NATIONAL CATHOLIC LAITY COUNCIL OPEN FORUM WITH EPISCOPAL CHAIRPERSONS, CHAPLAINS AND CHAIRPERSONS

NATIONAL CATHOLIC LAITY COUNCIL OPEN FORUM WITH EPISCOPAL CHAIRPERSONS, CHAPLAINS AND CHAIRPERSONS: The National Catholic Laity Council had an open forum with the Episcopal Chairpersons, Laity Chaplains and Laity Chairpersons at the Diocesan formation and Pastoral centre, Techiman from Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th October, 2023. The agenda for discussion included: Chaired by Prof. Sir Elias N.K. Sowley, members discussed means of stopping the degradation of the environment and asked Catholics not to be involved in the degradation to set an example for others. Concerning migration of Catholics especially the Youth to other Churches, the Youth chaplain Rev. Fr. James Bour-Mensah attributed it to lack of chaplains for the Catholic students in both Catholic and non-Catholic tertiary institutions. HDR SISTERS ELECT NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS

The Sisters of Handmaids of the Divine Redeemer of Accra, an indigenous congregation founded by Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD, and Co-Foundress Mother Providencia Hein SSpS in the year 1957 recently had their Ninth General Chapter. Prior to the Chapter, the Capitulars had a week retreat led by Rev. Fr. Michael Boakye Yeboah, a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kumasi and the Vice Rector of St. Great Provincial Major Seminary, Parkoso, in Kumasi, to prepare themselves towards the Chapter. Sr. Olivia Umoh, DC, a member of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, was the facilitator of the Chapter. The Chapter was to evaluate and plan for the future and growth of the Congregation. GHANA CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE APPOINTS NEW SECRETARY GENERAL

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), has   announced the appointment of a new Secretary General in the person of Very Rev. Fr. Clement Kwasi Adjei, a priest of the Sekondi-Takoradi Diocese in the Western Region of Ghana. The announcement and installation of the new Secretary General took place at the National Catholic Secretariat (NCS), Accra, 12th June 2023, during a send-off Mass presided over by Most Rev. Matthew Gyamfi (Bishop of Sunyani Diocese and president of the GCBC); in honour of the outgoing Secretary General, Very Rev. Fr. Lazarus Anondee who has served the Conference as Secretary General for the past 7 years.
