Keynote Address by President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) at the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 Plenary Assembly held in the Sunyani Diocese–Sunyani On Monday, November 13, 2023

The Church in Ghana is commissioned to evangelize; that is to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ the Lord to all peoples. Full authority has been given to me both in heaven and on earth; go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach them to carry out everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with you always, until the end of the world (Mt. 28:18-20). The Archbishop said children were beautiful gifts of God and should not be destroyed or subjected to any acts of violence. He also condemned sexual and other forms of abuse against children. The Archbishop asked parents to invest in their children as future leaders of the country, urging teachers to be cautious with their language in other not to scandalise them. He urged the congregation to love every child whether he or she is their biological child or not. In a homily on ...

‘Cease fire on GMOs debate’

By Damian Avevor The Ghana Catholic   Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has advised Ghanaians debating on Genetically-Modified Organisms (GMOs) to cease fire and allow proper dialogue and consultation to take place among all relevant stakeholders. “This will make Ghana the true winner in whatever decision we will eventually arrive at with regard to the possible introduction of GMOs in Ghana.” The Bishops said that there was the need to hasten slowly and not rush with the introduction of GMOs to the Ghanaian market. In a Press Statement on Genetically-Modified Crops and Foods, the Bishops said the GCBC “has followed the debate and discussions on the   possible introduction of Genetically-Modified Organisms (GMOs) in Ghana with keen interest,   attention and concern." The Statement signed by Most Rev. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, President of the GCBC, said “These debates and discussions have been on-going for some time now. Those who support GMO have been quick to point out the benefits of GMOs to the Ghanaian public while refusing to acknowledge or even blatantly deny any side effects and consequences such foods and crops may have." Opponents of GMOs, on the other hand, have also been quick to raise concerns about the possible health hazards and side effects ...
